New Summer Wardrobe Additions

As many of you already know, I'm a little bit of a shopaholic. And with the changing of the seasons, I give myself even more of an excuse to shop. Here are my top five new wardrobe updates for the Summer season and why.

1. Gingham & Frills

Gingham has been splashing itself all over the high street this Spring. The bold pattern has been making an appearance almost everywhere - on shirts, blouses, dresses, and most popularly, on trousers. There's also so many more colours on the high street this season, ranging from pink to blue to green. I've been really loving the gingham trend, especially for Spring/Summer, as it always reminds me of lazy Summer picnics and British seaside towns - is that strange?! For my wardrobe, I picked up these great black and white gingham trousers from Topshop. They're super flattering with the high waist and the cropped length, not to mention the fact that they have these adorable frills on the hemline (another trend ticked!). For a casual day out in the hot weather I paired these trousers with this unusually structured top from Whistles (now on sale). Halter necks and open back shirts have always been popular, but why not update that look with some feminine frills, perfectly complimenting the frills on the hems of these trousers.

2. Slogan T-shirts

I've always been obsessed with t-shirts, whether plain, band related, or my personal favourite, with slogans. Whistles always have a great range of french slogan t-shirts, but if you're looking for something a little bit more budget-friendly, than have a look at the collection in Topshop or Mango at the moment. A slogan t-shirt adds a touch of Parisienne to any outfit, and when paired with the right pieces can even work for evening wear or a smarter look; team it with a blazer and some wide leg trousers, or with dark jeans and a pair of killer heels, and you've got yourself a great smart-casual outfit for the Summer. On a more casual day out in London, I like to pair slogan t-shirts tucked into high waisted trousers with sandals and a leather jacket for the ultimate Paris-meets-London look.

3. Trainers

I was always the short girl in my group of friends, so heels were my go-to option with any look. But last year, I purchased my first pair of Adidas Superstars, and honestly, it's been so hard to wear anything else! Stan Smiths, Superstars, or Air Max are all great styles of casual trainers that are not only comfortable and practical, but look sleek too. They're the perfect shoe to tone down a smarter outfit, or to go wandering around London in. For the Summer, I purchased myself a new pair of silver striped Superstars, a pair I have lusted over for years. They look great with cut off denim jeans, culottes, or even a short floral dress in the warmer weather.

4. Asymmetrical & Stripes

Stripes and Breton are always a summer staple, but this year I wanted to challenge myself a bit with two things a) a different colour (hence this bright green which is not something a usually go for) and b) incorporating stripes into a different trend. What better than the asymmetrical shift! I've been obsessed with shirts that are off the shoulder for years, but instead of going for something a bit more obvious like a Bardot style, why not try the one shoulder look or something a little bit more structured. Enter this effortlessly cool sailor style shirt from Warehouse - bright, eye-catching and perfect for the warmer weather.

5. Slides, Mules & Loafers

Honestly, they may be a bit of a love/hate style of shoe, but when it comes to this year's most popular summer shoe, slides will ultimately win. They're easy to style, super chic for the city, and comfortable. I can wear them on cooler, more blustery days, and when it's super warm, so they're a versatile piece to invest in. If you can't afford the iconic Gucci pair (and let's face it, pay day's not that good) then there are a load of great alternatives, namely Ego (whose cheap-as-chips designs are very convincing as Gucci's) and Topshop. Slides masquerading as loafers, loafers in bright colours, and suede mules are all the rage - as long as it's either open back or masculinely shaped, it's perfect for this Summer's trend staples.
